The portal http://www.schulmediothek.de gives an idea about how a school library should be arranged, organised and led in order to work successfully in everyday school life. Moreover it refers to the numerous supplementary service offers public libraries provide for schools. The portal is made for heads and staff of school libraries, for teachers, students, and parents as well as everyone else who is interested. The portal provides information on all questions of everyday work in and with a school library.

Essential subjects are:

• Organisation and administration
• Use of EDP and Internet
• Stock building and stock exploitation
• Pedagogical and didactic use of school libraries in teaching and everyday school life
• Reading promotion and guidance on media competence
• Offers of public libraries for schools
• Idea pool "reading promotion"
• Addresses of schools with school libraries as well as important national and international contacts and links
• Technical literature and actual news about the themes "school library" and "library and school"

The content of the portal www.schulmediothek.de has been created and is being maintained by a group of experts from "Deutscher Bibliotheksverband" (German Library Association) called "Bibliothek und Schule" (library and school) with the assistance of "Deutscher Bildungsserver" (German Educational Server). Responsible for development and content of the portal also are:

• "Kinder- und Jugendbibliotheken" (Children and Youth Libraries), a group of experts from "Deutscher Bibliotheksverband"
• "Institut für Film und Bild in Wissenschaft und Unterricht" (Institute of Film and Picture in Science and Teaching)
